Postpartum Doula

Location: On-site

Hours: 4-12hrs/shift; Day or overnight shifts available

Salary: $15/hr training; $25-36/hr 

MILK is a maternal health education organization focused on closing the gap between clinical appointments and real-life support. We believe maternal health outcomes improve when education is structured, evidence-based, and community-centered.

We are building a postpartum support team that prioritizes both compassionate care and clinical awareness within appropriate scope.

Position Overview

The Postpartum Doula provides in-home support to families during the early postpartum period, with a strong focus on maternal recovery, newborn care education, performing household tasks and structured guidance.

This role requires professionalism, reliability, and the ability to provide supportive care while maintaining clear scope of practice and referral protocols.

We are seeking doulas who are both nurturing and systems-oriented; individuals who understand that emotional support is valuable, but structured education and maternal awareness are essential.

Core Responsibilities
Maternal Support
  • Support physical and emotional recovery during the postpartum period

  • Reinforce education on warning signs and when to seek medical care (within scope)

  • Encourage rest, nourishment, hydration, and safe recovery practices

  • Provide structured check-ins and symptom awareness conversations

Newborn Care Education
  • Support parents with feeding, soothing, and sleep routines

  • Reinforce safe sleep guidelines

  • Assist with understanding normal newborn behavior

  • Provide practical newborn care demonstrations

Household & Transition Support
  • Light household tasks related to mother and baby

  • Meal preparation or nourishment support as agreed

  • Assist families in adjusting to new routines

  • Support sibling transitions when applicable

Professional Standards
  • Maintain clear boundaries and scope of practice

  • Document visits appropriately

  • Communicate with the agency regarding client needs or concerns

  • Refer families to medical providers or community resources when appropriate

  • Uphold confidentiality and professionalism at all times

 
Qualifications
  • Completed postpartum doula training (certification preferred but not required depending on experience)

  • Understanding of postpartum recovery and newborn care

  • Experience supporting breastfeeding families (preferred) 

  • Reliable transportation

  • Strong communication skills

  • Calm, grounded presence in family environments

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends as needed

Must be obtained before starting:​

  • CPR certification

  • Doula liability insurance

  • Criminal background check

  • Additional perinatal education training

 
Schedule & Commitment
  • Flexible scheduling based on client needs

  • Part-time / contract position

  • On-call availability may be required for certain clients
